Made for the solo exhibition No One Has Taught Us More Than John at Magician Space, Wake Up in the Morning turns a black suit into a small apparatus of worn identity. A 1.85-inch round screen is placed where a badge or breast-pocket emblem might be. On it, electronic badge v5 cycles through private diary fragments: waking up with a sore throat, cold hands, a blocked line of thought, studio fatigue, and the sentence in which a system no longer needs “me.” Most phrases appear in black on white; selected words flash red, including “不期待” and “挡住.” The badge functions as both identifier and tiny screen, a name tag that keeps leaking the body it is supposed to summarize.
Process notes
The text comes from a diary I kept across an ordinary workday — waking with a sore throat, cold hands, a thought that keeps getting blocked, studio fatigue, the line where a system no longer needs me — then cut into short units the round screen can hold. Inside that stream I marked twenty words to flash red: 不舒服, 想吐, 冷, 没有, 算了, 挡住, 不知道, 烫, 困, 忘了, 是谁, 想不起来, 钝, 微乎其微, 不想看, 不需要, 我, 不期待, 分不清, 了. Worn on the chest where a name tag goes, the badge keeps leaking the body it was supposed to summarize — “早上醒来”, “思路总是被”, “挡住”, “不期待” surfacing and passing on a loop.
